Coraline

This movie looks ridiculously tight, the website had me hooked all the way from the copy on the loader. Come to find out, its an adaptation of a Neil Gaiman graphic novel. Dude is the truth. Look him up

Too bad Dell ruined that Tim Burton/Henry Sellick font with their shitty ads for shitty computers. Coraline was lucky I clicked on the banner in the first place.

Music videos I've been watching on repeat

This past week I've stumbled upon two videos I can't stop watching.

The first one is pretty captivating and I love the song:

The second one is fuuuuucking amazing.
So amazing, in fact, that I would actualy describe it to my own grandmother as "fucking amazing." And I might want to marry the girl.

The Creative Process by John Cleese

Comic genius John Cleese sat down for an interview a few years ago and had a lot to say about creativity and the creative process. I keep coming back to this passage, where he discusses the importance of whim...

I knew a wonderful teacher once—a tutor. He tutored my stepsons and my elder daughter. He said to me, "Always start where the energy is."
People make an awful mistake by starting where the energy isn't. If you're feeling very world-weary—and sometimes we're all in that boat—you have to sit down with something that's going to engage you. That doesn't mean you just switch on the TV and watch a cartoon, but it does mean asking, What would be fun? Maybe take a piece of paper and a pencil and start drawing silly things. Go for a walk. Just sit very quietly watching your breathing. Anything. Just allow the whim to get you going.
Now, you can't do this all of the time; it's too disconnected. But I think in that particular frame of mind, when you run out of energy and motivation, I think you have to go right down to the instinct, right down to a whim.
I'm coming up on 60, and I'm wondering where my life will begin to go. I need to take a slightly different direction. I talked to a very wise man, and he said, "If you're trying to find a new direction, don't plan it, because this [pointing to his head] has been planning your life up to now. You can't plan something new with the same old apparatus." He said, "Leave a gap. Leave a space, and just do things on auto for a while. Just see where these whims take you."
It's like creativity. You have to follow it without knowing where you're going. If you try to control where you're going, you're back in the same process. It's like asking a piece of machinery that's broken to mend itself.

Photographer needed on site- Dec 6th at the Earl 10pm

Heyo,

Soulphonics and I have a gig on Dec. 6th at the Earl in East Atlanta (annoying barrage of flyers to follow in the near future) and we need to get a decent band shot before the gig (posed, or not, you decide). The catch is we cannot pay you, but we can get you into the show for free.

Please let me know if you would be interested. It may work into one of your projects before panel, who knows. More than one photographer would be awesome.. so let me know if you are able to make it out that night around 10pm.

Thanks!

All Hail the King

"If you stumble across a wallet anytime soon, you may be in for a treat. Burger King recently “dropped” over 5,000 wallets in various urban hot spots. Those “would-be good Samaritans” who pick them up find a note inside telling them that “The King” wants them to keep the contents of the wallet for themselves. Each wallet contains a different set of offerings. Cash (ranging from $1 to $100 bills), Burger King gift cards, “The King’s” driver’s license and maps featuring nearby Burger King restaurants have all been found in these abandoned wallets. This promotion was conducted with absolutely no media attention or warning by Burger King but comes at an optimal time, given the current economic crisis. So far, news of this guerrilla marketing sensation has only been picked up by bloggers, but I expect this will change once the blogosphere hype reaches the mainstream media." - via Promotional Products Blogger

The Universal Photo Timer is a hand-held photo flash and camera timer controller.

3 in 1 functions:

WIRELESS SHUTTER RELEASE AND TIMER
Acts as an infra-red transmitter used to trigger the shutter, without disturbing the camera. It can be used for long exposures (bulb mode) with many SLR cameras. Can also be programmed to activate the shutter at regular intervals to perform time lapse photography. As an option, you can connect the timer to your camera with a shutter release cable.
CAMERA AND FLASH TRIGGER
It allows you to activate the shutter of your camera or fire an electronic flash with a programmable delay in response to a trigger event. Flash trigger is commonly used for high speed photography such as capturing falling water drops. Flash trigger can be used together with variety of cameras including SLR as well as point and shoot cameras. Construct your own sensors or choose from a variety of our sensors and accessories.

FLASH SLAVE UNIT
Acts as a flash slave. One of the common uses of a flash slave is providing background illumination through a second flash unit. Select between normal flash or pre-flash synchronization used with digital cameras. The timer supports high voltage and low voltage flash units.

Creative Writing Goodies

Do you enjoy writing short stories, poetry, witty and tender emails? Are you interested in developing your creative writing outside the realms of advertising? Do you have oodles of free time?

A couple of students and I are trying to put together a creative writing group–circle of friendship, if you will. It would involve sending each other work and meeting semi-randomly to discuss and perhaps consume an adult beverage. There's no previous experience necessary. seriously. Just an interest in experimenting and developing your writing in other genres. Not even previous interest is necessary. Just interest right now, currently. You can email Brittanyleepoole@gmail.com if you're, uh, interested.

Winter Kickball/Dodgeball League

Hey fellow circus peers/teachers.  I am trying to start a circus kickball or dodgeball team to play for an atlanta league that meets mostly at piedmont park.  I think that most of the games will be either on saturday and sunday followed by a trip to the park tavern.  Please let me know if you are interested.  It costs a little money to be in the league but divided among a team it shouldn't be more than $5-10 a person for the season.  So either comment to this post with your email and whether you would want to do dodgeball or kickball or either or email me at anniejohnston4@mac.com or find me in the hall or whatever.  oh and please tell any friends/family....

Help me help you

Listen, folks. I've got stuff, you want stuff. Let's make this happen.

I'm leaving for Boulder on Friday and need to get rid of anything I can't fit in my car. This is a fire sale! Two days only! If you're interested in anything, give me a call at 678-386-9175.

Old wood bed with box spring/mattress (and sheets and pillows if you want). Queen I believe. I paid $100 for it at a yard sale. So, let's say $50.

Nice little nightstand. Comes with an assortment of unused condoms and a pack of cigarettes. $10.

Sizable corner desk. In pretty good condition, but will require a little disassembly/reassembly. Originally over $200. Let's say $35.

Decent desk chair. Nothing crazy, but it works. $10.

Worthless bookshelf. $3. Or free.

Little lamp. $5. Or free.

Desk lamp. $4. Or free.

All these prices are negotiable. I just need these things out of my house by tomorrow. So if you want something I'll probably just give it to you if you ask.

A good use of money nowadays

I'm not really sure of the exact amount of currency used, but it's still quite creative.

Students, the reason for this blog is discussions about our industry. What is current, what is relevent, etc. That being said, there's no room for egos or ego-bashing. Let's keep it for what it was intended for.... advertising, design, copy, image.

Here's something awesome I recently found out about:

Looking for a Team. (Awesome Apartment for Rent)

Hey everybody! I am a recent grad, art director, and looking to move soon and wanted to give my fellow circus students a chance to get this place before the general public. So now I am looking for someone to move in with me for one month or so and eventually take this place over when I leave. It is a great place for saving money and being very close to school. It's cheap for one person and cheaper for two. Here are some details:

~1300 sq feet, 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom.
1208 Woodland Ave, 30324
1.1 miles from the school.
cheap. 695/month ($347.50 if you have a roommate)
Comes with stuff/furniture. (I have a lot of stuff that I could leave behind including a bed and others that i could sell)
PICTURES of it now: http://tjwalthall.com/1208 (keep in mind it's messy since my roommate moved out today)

also the landlord is cool and didn't mind me painting the walls.

So I am open to suggestions, if you have a roommate already in mind we can work something out now, or if you have any other creative suggestions I am always interested in hearing them.

Feel free to call any time or come by. Seriously, call.

As this is the first student post, I feel as if I should have something profound or entertaining to say. Rather, I'll start by adding things I've found interesting and encourage my fellow creatives to do the same.
